Repair vs Replace: How to Decide
UPVC guttering doesn't rot, but it degrades from UV exposure over 25–30 years. Joints open as the PVC becomes brittle, brackets rust and fail, and sections crack. Where only one or two joints or sections have failed on guttering that is otherwise in good condition, repair is the cost-effective choice. Where the guttering is 25+ years old and multiple joints and brackets are failing simultaneously, full replacement is almost always better value than a series of individual repairs.
The Chippenham properties most commonly at the replacement threshold are the 1990s–2000s Pewsham and similar development estate houses — original UPVC now 25–35 years old. We carry common UPVC profiles for these properties and can replace in like-for-like specification.
Cast Iron Guttering — Maintenance vs Replacement
Victorian and Edwardian properties in Chippenham town centre, Corsham, and Devizes frequently have original cast iron guttering. Unlike UPVC, cast iron can be maintained indefinitely — joints resealed with correct mastic compound, sections replaced in matching profile where cracked. Cast iron guttering in good condition is worth maintaining: it carries more flow than equivalent UPVC, looks appropriate on period buildings, and is often subject to conservation area guidance that recommends retention over UPVC replacement.
Where cast iron has corroded through and multiple sections need replacing, UPVC replacement is a practical consideration on non-conservation-area properties. On conservation area buildings, cast iron replacement in matching profile is generally preferred and sometimes required.
The Fascia Assessment — Why It Matters
The most important thing we do on any guttering visit is assess the fascia board condition behind the guttering. Fascia boards are the timber or UPVC boards to which gutters are fixed. Original timber fascia on 1960s Hardenhuish or similar properties is now 50–60 years old and frequently rotten behind layers of paint.
Fitting new gutters to rotten fascia boards is a short-term fix — the gutters will pull away from the rotted board within 2–3 years. We identify rotten fascia during every guttering visit and quote replacement as part of the combined job where needed. Scaffold is already up for both operations, making the combined cost significantly less than two separate visits.

One of the most common installation errors on guttering replacement is insufficient fall. Gutters should fall towards downpipes at a gradient of approximately 5mm per metre. Guttering that runs level or falls away from the downpipe will pool water and overflow. Many guttering systems installed on 1980s–90s properties in Wiltshire were installed level — we correct falls during replacement as standard practice.
Wiltshire-Specific Considerations
The Avon Valley towns — Chippenham, Melksham, Bradford-on-Avon — have heavier leaf fall and higher moss growth than chalk ridge towns. Gutters here need clearing at least once annually, and properties near the river corridor or under significant tree canopy benefit from twice-annual clearing. Annual maintenance contracts are available for all Wiltshire properties.
Malmesbury's exposed hilltop position means gutters on the south and west-facing elevations receive the full force of south-westerly weather. Bracket failure from wind loading is more frequent here than in valley towns. We use stainless fixing screws and ensure sufficient bracket density on exposed Malmesbury installations.
